All Grown Up: A Vintage Baseball Inspired 30th Birthday Bash!

April 11th

Baseball themed 30th birthday party

There are very few people on this planet who love baseball more than my boyfriend.  So with his 30th birthday just around the corner I wanted to give him something special that combined his favorite things: baseball, friends and family!

I LOVE a good themed party and love creating the special touches that pull everything together.  But themes can take a wrong turn down “Over-Done Alley” very quickly.  To keep this party from looking like a 5-year-olds first “boy-girl party” I chose a more sophisticated/vintage color palette (deep red and soft navy) and inserted those baseball-themed touches sparingly.  Just because a party has a theme doesn’t mean that every little detail needs to scream “this is the theme!” Your friends are smart; you don’t need to hit them over the head with baseballs for them to understand where you’re going.

Although I was convinced he knew about the party, it turns out he had no clue! My carefully orchestrated (lie-filled) plan had worked!  From ballpark-inspired food to Cracker Jack favors, I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out and most importantly the bf and everyone else had a great time!  The look on his face was priceless!  So without further ado here are few highlights from the party.  Batter up!

I’d like to give a special shout out to a few people who helped me pull this all off.  First to my mom and aunt, Judy, for setting everything up that day (per my very detailed instructions…God help them!) allowing me to keep the birthday boy distracted for a few more hours.  To a few of my best friends, Sara, Caitlin and Michaela, for assisting my mom and helping me craft my plan (and for just being lovely ladies).  To Maria Gallant at Elisa Confectionery for the adorable, and delicious, baseball cake pops and Shauna Rue of Purple Ink Press for letterpress-ing my custom coasters (one of the biggest hits of the party!): wonderful job ladies, as always! To the staff, particularly Tim, at MacDonald’s Tavern, you all do a fabulous job! Thanks for everything! Last and certainly not least Mike Nyman, for his fabulous photography: thank you for capturing all the details and the energy of such a special event and for being an all-around nice guy!

A Few of my Favorite Things – Winter Edition

December 13th

As most of you know by now, winter is definitely not my favorite season.  However, the holiday season is really the “most wonderful time of the year” and it’s also the time when I can indulge in a few my favorite things! I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite holiday/winter items for all of you! Enjoy!

Favorite Things Winter 2011

I really know the holidays are here when I spot my first red Starbucks holiday cup! There’s something about taking that first sip of a Peppermint Mocha that really gets me in that holiday spirit!  What’s even better? A tall “Skinny Peppermint Mocha” is only 100 calories! You can enjoy the flavors of the season without the guilt!

So now that you’ve got your “Skinny Peppermint Mocha” in hand you can enjoy a few cookies! Everywhere you go this season there will be an abundance of cookies to enjoy – nothing wrong with that!  If you’re attending a cookie swap or looking for hostess gift ideas Martha Stewart has a library of delicious recipes for you to try as well as great packaging ideas!

This year I was introduced to the miracle of L.L. Bean’s Wicked Good Moccasins. If you have never had the pleasure of slipping your feet into these fluffy clouds of warmth and goodness I really suggest you do.  I had a smile on from ear to ear the first time I tried a pair on. Seriously, ask my sister.  It was borderline embarrassing.  Until I realized how warm and comfortable my feet would be this winter!

I actually don’t paint my nails that often.  But when I do I like to try something a little different.  OPI usually releases a collection of fabulous shades perfect for the winter season and the Swiss Collection is no disappointment!  My personal fav is “William Tell Me About OPI”.

Another seasonal favorite I look forward to all year is the release of Sam Adam’s Winter Lager.  This is definitely not a light beer but it’s still one of my favorites.  I actually look forward to most of Sam Adam’s seasonal releases but the richness of the Winter Lager makes it a perfect complement to the season.

Lip balm is actually a year-long addiction for me but I think the “peppermint tingle” of Burt’s Bees Lip Balm is perfect for the season! I keep one on my nightstand, one in my purse and another in my desk drawer.

Scarves are another year-long favorite of mine but I’m especially loving this one from ArtLab on Etsy. Infinity scarves are great because you don’t have to worry about how to tie them – you  can just throw them on and go!  I wear a lot of gray, black and white during the winter so this scarf will go with just about anything.

Finally, because you will eventually have to go out in the cold, a great pair of cable knit mittens is a must! These Pop-Top Mittens from Ugg Australia are fashionable and functional.  I’m a mitten gal because they really do keep your hands warmer than gloves but occasionally you do need to free your fingers to dig around your purse for things (lip balm most likely) so convertible style mittens are really great!

So there you have it – a few of the items that make the long, cold winter a little more enjoyable!

Introducing: Dear LC

December 5th

There's no excuse not to dream

Sitting on my desk is a Dove Dark Chocolate wrapper from two years ago and its message, “there’s no excuse not to dream”, has been staring me in the face every day since I first unwrapped that delicious little package. I’m not a fan of this terminology but I’ve always been a “creative type”. Although I had been working in marketing for two years at that point I still found that I needed an outlet to express myself creatively – I have a very different style than they very traditional organization I work for. So I started down the path of designing custom wedding invitations – a perfect outlet for me since I LOVE weddings. Seriously…a delicious cake, a big party, and an excuse to shop for months for the “perfect dress”? What’s not to like?

How it all started

I had been designing personalized note cards for friends and family as gifts for years.  A note pad here, monogrammed stationery there, the occasional hand-made holiday card.  But the thought of designing wedding stationery didn’t really cross my mind until a few recently engaged friends of mine asked if I would be interested in designing their wedding invitations.  Having a background in graphic design and a love of weddings (and of course my friends) I decided to take a stab at it – and I actually really loved it! I really enjoyed getting to know my friends better and designing something that was truly unique and a true representation of each couple.  Word of mouth was fantastic and I started getting requests from people I hadn’t even met before! Strangers were asking me to design their wedding invitations! I was completely stunned.

My inspiration

I had been following fellow stationery designer turned branding expert Emily Ley for a while and was incredibly inspired by her ability to put her personality and style into her custom wedding invitations. I reached out to her in October of 2010 for a little advice on how to take my business to the next level.  Emily asked me what should have been a very simple question: How did I feel about my brand? Ummm…what?

The truth was I had no connection to my brand, Pink Snail Stationery.  It was just something I came up with that I thought would be “catchy”.  Having a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s in communication I knew this was a fatal error.  Branding is so important. You need to be 100%, totally in love with your brand and I wasn’t.  So when Emily announced she was teaming up with Lara Casey to launch Making Brands Happen I knew it was something I had to be a part of.

Slowly but surely

Working with Lara and Emily was one of the most inspiring and challenging experiences of my entire life. They helped me to fully explore who I am and turn that into a business (and my first ever Wedding Collection) I was pumped about! The process wasn’t easy and there were a few breakdowns along the way but as I began to see Dear LC take shape I found myself with a renewed sense of confidence in myself and my business!

LC

I can’t really say that I knew who Lynn Caputo was before my conversations with Emily and Lara.  Just one conversation with Lara helped me reveal things about myself I hadn’t discovered in 28 years of life!! I still can’t believe how well they were able to “peg” me.

They helped me to dig deeper into who I was and what I wanted my business to be. The result was a brand and a business that was truly, 100% me.

Understanding who I am and using that to build a brand that I’m truly in love with is one of my proudest accomplishments and there’s no way I wouldn’t have gotten here without the advice and guidance of Lara and Emily. So without further ado I’m pleased (and very proud) to share with you Dear LC!

Dear LC Brand BoardThank you to everyone who has helped me and supported me along the way! Your support and confidence in me is appreciated in ways you may never know. I’m excited to share Dear LC with all of you and even more excited to see where it goes!
